"You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all he left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on."

'Jack'
Roseknoll's Jack Of All Trades VCD1 BN RA TDX OA OAJ OF DCAT
5/15/2025 to 6/15/2024
Jack was the sweetest boy who ever came in to our lives. He was all about the love! It was a shock that he passed away so suddenly, hemangiosarcoma, HSA . He was at home with my husband on the couch when he passed.
He fully lived up to his name as a Jack of all Trades, Tracking Dog Excellent, Agility, Obedience, Rally, Scentwork and Water. He did it all. But he was not the easiest dog to train. Jack would melt if I even raised an eyebrow of disapproval, training required patience and endless positive reinforcement. Jack rose to many stellar heights at shows he earned Scentwork High in Trial at the PWD National Specialty with my husband. It was the first time my husband ever entered a show ring and he had never practiced, but Jack knew his job! He also was obedience High in Trial at the 2022 PWDCNC Regional Specialty.
What Jack loved the most was long hikes and afternoons sleeping on the deck. His gentle nature shone through on many occasions. When he would come to work with me, young children would run to him like a magnet and he would let them hug him and do his sit, down, stand tricks at their command. When we found a crippled old cat and brought her into our home, Jack was the one to curl up and share a cushion with “Lucy”. He was a doting “Uncle” to Violet when she arrived and never let her out of is sight.
That all said, he was also very naughty. We lost more steaks, butter dishes, lunch bags and cheese trays to counter surfing. He never let an open dishwasher go unchecked nor could he walk past the garbage compacter without pressing the open step to see what was inside to eat. All my coat pockets are chewed out because I had left a treat crumb in the pocket.
Now when I come in the door, I still expect to have him doing his happy your home dance with a ROOOO song to greet me.
OH Jack, you are missed so very much.

'Martini'
(CH GCH Diamante’s Shaken Not Stirred)
3/9/2009 to 7/21/2023
We had to say goodbye to Martini.
She was definitely the queen of our dog family and had the biggest smile. We have been through this before but it never gets any easier.
She was our only PWD who did not like to swim. She was a beloved member of our family.
She has joined Tuxedo, Diamond, Dazzle, Sparkle & Derby.
Until we meet again, we love you forever.

'LUCY'
CH Lucia Flor de Mar, CD, TT-2PWD
(Baluarte de Alvalade x Farmion Nascenca)
5/1/1984 – 6/7/1994
My search for a Portuguese Water Dog began almost a year before finally, I was referred to a breeder in New York, and Lucy was on her way to Arizona! Actually, it was too hot to fly her to Phoenix, so I arranged a trip to NoCal and had her flown into San Francisco. I did not leave my heart there, just the opposite, my love affair with this breed began there!
Lucy was not only my first PWD, she was first of many things for me:
The first dog I ever went into a show ring with. First I did agility with, first to train for a CD, first I put a CH title on, first dog I ever groomed. She also was the first dog I ever entered an American Temperament Test with, she passed and was the 2nd PWD in the country to earn a TT title! She was the first dog I had with hip dysplasia and was not bred. And, she was the first dog to let me know that I really had a lot to learn when it comes to training and dog behavior!
Lucy took me on many adventures, introduced me to many new friends, she started me on a road lasting over 40 years filled with PWDs and love.
Oh, almost forgot Lucy was also the first of many “Legado Ladies From L”

“LEZA”
CH Gentileza do Mar, CGC, JWD
(Baluarte de Alvalade X Morena do Mar)
5/5/1985 – 11/1/2000
The saying goes, “one is never enough”, and it took me less than a year to realize how much I wanted another Portuguese Water Dog in my family.
Lady luck smiled on me when I found Sonja Santos on the East Coast with a repeat of a prior exceptional breeding and she was willing to place one of the pups with me! This little brown bundle of dynamite, at 17” was on the small side but built like a little tank and possessed every trait and quality I hoped for in a PWD. With an exquisite, floating movement, great structure, she brought home many ribbons. Leza became the founding bitch for Legado and produced many quality PWDs with traditional working traits.
My kennel name “Legado” is the Portuguese word for Legacy, and Leza’s legacy, were the many beautiful, quality Portuguese Water Dogs
she gave us.
Loving memories,
Janis Watts
“Lula”
CH Legado Brindar de Bidahoche, CD,OA,OAJ,ROM,WWD
(Tigre Preto do Mar X Gentileza do Mar)
11/26/1989 – 10/20/2004
From my second breeding, the “B” Litter, Lula let me know from the beginning that she was the pup that was going to stay with me. She had places to go, people to see and things to do. She took me along for the ride, and boy oh boy did we have fun!
A great working attitude and a beauty in the ring she was my first PWD to achieve a ROM award! But the best part is that she was dedicated to her family, my good pal and I was her BFF, I loved her dearly.
Loving memories,
Janis Watts
